What the published numbers say
Thumbtack's welding cost page, last updated October 26, 2026, reports national averages. A typical welding job runs about $159 to $514, with a low end near $69 and a high end near $1,256. Pipe repair is listed at $120 to $160. The same page says some welders charge an average minimum of about $60 for any welding work however small, and that mobile welders often add a travel fee or a minimum service fee.
Hourly figures are less consistent. National cost guides that came up in search results, including HomeGuide's welding cost guide, commonly quote professional welding at roughly $60 to $125 an hour. They name $80 to $100 as the usual middle and show rural mobile rates as low as $45. Treat that as a rough national picture. None of these sources is a Houston price list, and a Katy provider may sit above or below them.
That gap is the reason this page gives ranges and drivers instead of one price. A provider who has seen photos of your gate or trailer can say more than any guide can.

Typical ranges at a glance
Use the table to sanity-check a quote, not to predict one.
| Item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Typical welding job | About $159 to $514 | Thumbtack national range; the low and high ends were about $69 and $1,256 |
| Minimum service charge | About $60 on average | Some providers set a one-to-two-hour minimum instead, so ask which applies |
| Hourly rate | Roughly $60 to $125 | National guides; $80 to $100 is named most often; not specific to Houston |
| Pipe repair | About $120 to $160 | Thumbtack national figure; a pipe fence run with new posts costs more |
| Aluminum or stainless | Often 1.5 to 2 times steel | Thumbtack lists steel as the cheapest metal to weld |
| Travel to the site | Set by the provider | May be flat, by the mile, or built into the minimum |
What moves a quote around Katy
These are the factors that most often separate a low quote from a high one in this part of Texas.
- Distance. Brookshire is about 7 miles west of Katy on Interstate 10, Fulshear is 33 miles from downtown Houston and Sealy is 49 miles west of it, so a call at the far end of the corridor can carry more travel than a Katy driveway.
- Metal. Steel is the cheapest to weld. Aluminum and stainless need different filler and technique, which is why the price climbs.
- Preparation. Rust, paint, grease and old cracked welds take grinding time before a new weld goes in. A gate post standing in wet clay takes longer to reset than one beside a slab.
- Access. Gravel, soft ground after rain, a locked gate or work at height all add time.
- Materials. Rod or wire often rides on the truck, while plate, hinges, posts or a replacement hitch may be extra.
- Timing. Thumbtack's mobile welding page lists urgency, such as after-hours or emergency service, as a price factor. The urgent and same-week repairs guide explains how that conversation goes.
How a minimum charge shapes small jobs
A minimum covers the truck, the setup and the drive whether the weld takes ten minutes or two hours. That is why a latch repair can cost nearly as much as a hinge reset. The practical answer is to bundle. List the sagging gate, the cracked step rail and the trailer ramp in the same request so one visit covers all three.
Ask how the clock runs. Some providers start billing when the truck leaves their yard and others when it reaches your gate. Neither is wrong, but on a long drive out to Simonton or Sealy the difference is real money.
Reading a quote
A usable quote names the call-out or minimum, the hourly rate or flat price, what materials are included, and what happens if the metal turns out worse than the photos suggested. If a number arrives without those pieces, ask for them before saying yes.
- Ask whether the price is for the repair as described or an hourly estimate that can grow.
- Ask who approves extra work found after the grinder comes out.
- Ask what happens to the price if the repair cannot be finished in one visit.
Where to go next
Bring the full list of questions from what to ask a mobile welder to the call. If the job is a cracked trailer, trailer frame crack repair or replace shows when a repair stops making financial sense. For acreage gates, read ranch and acreage gate repair. Each service page, such as gates, fences and railings, lists its own cost drivers.
Common questions
Is a welder's quote the price I will pay?
A quote is the provider's estimate for the work as described. If photos hid rust or a second crack, the scope can change, so agree in advance how changes are priced and who approves them.
Can I save money by taking the part to a shop?
Thumbtack's cost page notes that bringing smaller items to a shop can save money compared with a mobile visit. Gates, fixed steel and heavy trailers are the reason mobile welders exist, because moving them is the larger cost.
Are these figures what Katy providers charge?
No. They are national figures from cost guides, shown so you have a yardstick. Each independent provider sets its own prices, and the request form only starts the conversation.
Why do two quotes for the same gate differ so much?
Usually the scope differs. One quote may reset the post and replace hinges while another only re-welds a corner. Ask each provider to list what is included before comparing totals.
